The Art of People

art of people dave kerpen“They like me. They really, really like me” – Sally Field. And, theoretically, everyone else can say that too, after reading this book, The Art of People: 11 Simple People Skills That Will Get You Everything You Want. Author Dave Kerpen realizes that interconnectedness in today’s digital world makes competition less productive than the kind of cooperation you get when people like, respect and trust you. (Hey, no one’s going to go out on a limb for the hypercompetitive guy, so it makes sense.)

Kerpen’s tips are sensible: he leads with the idea that you need to know yourself to be yourself, and yes, there’s a personality assessment. Once you know yourself, you can surround yourself with the right people, and Kerpen suggests everything will fall into place from there, because people will do everything they can for you if they like you. Much of what you can do to help out and nurture your relationships with these people is common sense: active listening, putting everyone at ease, understanding motivations and resolving conflict. Each chapter ends with fast action steps to take, as well. It’s an easy read with common-sense communication tips.
