Meet “Mistr Kostky” – AR For Rubik’s Cubes

We’ve never had the patience for Rubik’s cubes. Now, Martin Španěl has used augmented reality (AR) to create a solution for unscrambling them.

First, it scans the current permutation of the faces of the cube, so it knows what it has to deal with. Then, it calculates how to unscramble it – looking for a solution in 20 turns or less (using the two-phase algorithm for solving the cube in 20 turns developed by Herbert Kociemba). It uses AR to show the user what to turn, and recognizes when a turn is done, so that it can show the next.
